A land of volcanoes

Costa Rica has 116 volcanoes, among which 5 are active (Arenal, Irazu, Poas, Rincon de la Vieja, Turrialba) and 2 asleep (Barva and Orosi). They are an integral part of Costa Rican landscape.

The "Poas" volcano"

Volcan Poas - Costa Rica

Main attraction from TACACORI Ecolodge, the Poas volcano is the most visited and most accessible volcanoes in Costa Rica. A beautiful scenic drive all the way to the top through fields of coffee, horticultural gardens and pastures. From the parking lot, a 5 minutes walk leads you to one of the largest active craters in the world.

From the terrace, you'll have a breathtaking view of the 300 m deep and 1.6 km wide collapsed crater (caldera) with its sulfurous fumaroles. You can see a turquoise acid lake and on a clear day the view of the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean is magnificent. The second crater, Botos, is a crystal clear rain fed lake surrounded by highland jungle and is reached by a walk through a unique dwarf cloud forest.
